We know the test.
SAT success is more about how you approach the test
than it is about the material covered on the test. Each student for the most
part comes to us "knowing what they know" - what we mean by this is that they
have already learned most of the content and concepts covered on the SAT in
school. They do not come to us to learn Geometry and Algebra (although we will
cover the basics).
Students come to us to learn how to get more SAT
problems right. Period.
Our program is designed to
teach our students how to use what they have learned in school to get more
problems right on the SAT. Now, it is not all smoke and mirrors, but it is
about learning the proper tricks and techniques. Don't let anybody tell you
otherwise, the SAT can be mastered through the use of these tricks and
techniques. The SAT isn't school. Therefore, the SAT is not to be treated
like a school test. We know the test and we will cover EVERYTHING students
need to get the most out of their SAT scores.
We know kids.
We teach our students how to improve their SAT scores in a
very simple and concrete way. SAT prep takes time and we know the proper
amount of work to give students without overwhelming them.
We believe that to be an
effective tutor, you have to be friendly, personable and able to communicate
with the kids (and parents). Adam and Jenny have worked at overnight camps for
10 years in a
variety of leadership roles, and the most important thing we have learned is how to relate to
kids in a way that encourages them without pressuring them. These skills go
farther than you can imagine when it comes to tutoring.
Most students feel that their whole future is
riding on this test and that is a lot of pressure to be under. When students
feel this kind of stress,
it's hard for them to succeed at anything, let alone a test as foreign and
intimidating as the SAT. Our program is designed to alleviate this
pressure one step at a time.
We know what it takes to improve.
Once the students feel more comfortable, we can really begin
improving their
SAT score.
The key at this point becomes work. The SAT is just like any other subject, you get
better at it by studying and practicing. If students are willing to commit to a 90 minute lesson and an hour
a week of homework, they will
improve.
Well, as you can see our philosophy doesn't cover how to solve
math problems or how to deal with reading comprehension questions. Don't worry, all of the specific techniques,
tricks and concepts
will be addressed within our course. We just want to emphasize some other aspects of tutoring -comfort and
confidence- because they are the real key to raising an SAT score.
